To be eligible for a Study Permit , you must have a letter of acceptance from a DLI in Canada, proof of identity, and sufficient financial support. You may also need a letter of explanation to support your application. If you plan to study in Quebec, you must have a valid Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) or your letter of approval for your CAQ. Your study permit consists of an expiry date that tells you when you have to stop studying and leave Canada. If you are planning to take up another course after finishing your initial program , you must apply for Study Permit Extension. The application must be submitted at least 30 days before your current study permit expires, if you want to keep studying in Canada. You must provide documents such as proof of identity, photocopy of current Study Permit , Proof of Acceptance at a DLI, a letter of approval or CAQ or CSQ if applying in Quebec, Proof of Funds and Previous Academic Transcripts. A letter of explanation is also required to support your application. If your study permit has expired, you must apply to restore your status as a student. Also, if your spouse, common-law partner or dependent children came with you to Canada, they may also need to restore their status. If you wish to stay in Canada after your status has expired you may apply for restoration of status within the 90 days following your loss of status. If not, you have to leave Canada. Remember It is illegal to remain in Canada beyond the validity of your status and It is illegal to study without a required study permit.
